Information about the tour at Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
Tour in short: Being one of the prettiest and most photographed distilleries, with its twin padodas, water wheel and old stone buildings set in cobbled yards, a visit to Strathisla is highly recommended. The tour is interesting and educating showing a compact working distillery - a lot to see - Porteus mill, mashtuns, stills and copper pipes; the River Islay and a nice dramroom built like a library of a stately home.

The history of Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne as Milltown distillery, Strathisla had a succession of licensees until 1828 when William Longmore took ownership. After a fire in 1876 he rebuilt the distillery to its present look. From the 1870s to 90s the distillery was temporarily named after the valley and the River Isla to Strathisla, then to Milton, and back to Strathisla in 1949, when it was taken over by James Barclay, one of the founders of Chivas Brothers. The former owner George Pomeroy, a London financier, was found guilty of tax evasion. The production was doubled in 1965.
