Oban Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery

Stafford St

Phone: +44 (0) 1631 572 004

Overlooking the charming harbour, the distillery is right in the heart of Oban - the Gateway to the Isles - on Scotland's west coast. Listed as a historic building and originally the Stevensons’ family house; the Oban offices had a peep-hole door which enabled checks on work in progress.

The still house was rebuilt in 1969 – 1972; the present pair of broad-necked stills together with the unique rectangular double worm-tubs results in the medium-bodied long lived style of Oban. However the cramped location prevented large expansion and it is the smallest distillery in Diageo’s range of six ‘Classic Malts’. Oban is also officially released as Distillers Edition matured on Montilla sherry casks. The Manager's Drams bottlings (released for staff only) are collectables. Independent botlings include 1962, 1972 and 21-year-old editions. A large part of production is used in blends like Bell's. A nice visitor centre opened in 1989.

The history of Oban Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: The local businessman Hugh Stevenson built the distillery in 1794. It remained in the family until 1866 when it was sold to Peter Cumstie, who in return sold it in 1883 to Walter Higgins. Walter renovated and enlarged the distillery in 1890. At the time Oban had grown from a small fishing village to a prosperous town with a busy port and railway, much thanks to the Stevenson family. Mesolithic remains from early settlers going back to 5000 BC were found in a cave in the cliffside at the back of the distillery, today featured on some of the Oban labels. In 1898, the owner of Aultmore Distillery, Alexander Edward, took over and just managed to save the distillery when the whisky market collapsed. In 1923 Oban Distillery Co was formed, nowadays part of Diageo.
