High on a hill overlooking the River Spey, with magnificent views
across to Ben Rinnes, the Macallan Visitor Centre nestles within the
glorious Easter Elchies Estate at Craigellachie. Distilling was established on the Macallan Farm up on
the banks of the river Spey in the 18th century. Visible from the road on the opposite side
and on all the packaging is the old Jacobean Manor Easter Elchies, built in the
sixteenth century and today used by Macallan for entertaining purposes. Traditionally with sherry notes,
the Macallan launched a new series in 2004 called Fine Oak with milder, clear notes of vanilla, matured in both sherry and bourbon casks. Between
1965 and 1975 the number of stills at Macallan was increased from six to 21.
Today there are 15 stills. Approximately 70 percent is sold as single malt.
Much of the remaining 30 percent is used the Famous Grouse blend.

The history of Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded: Alexander
Reid Legitimate in 1824. Distilling was established on the Macallan Farm up on
the banks of the river Spey in the 18th century. From the start it
was quite popular next to an old ford where farmers used to cross the river on
their way to the lowland markets. Visible from the road on the opposite side
and on all the packaging is the old Jacobean Manor Easter Elchies, built in the
sixteenth century and today used by Macallan for entertaining purposes. The
distillery became legitimate in 1824 by Alexander Reid under the name Elchies
Distillery. In 1847 James Priest and James Davidson joined Alexander until 1868
when James Stuart took over. In 1892 Roderick Kemp renovated and changed the
name to Macallan-Glenlivet.
Highland Distilleries (today Edrington) and Suntory bought
the majority of the shares in Macallan in 1996.
