The name Glenkinchie is derived from the Quincey
family, landowners in the 14th century and the Kinchie Burn that still flows
through this small picturesque distilling community hidden in the gentle hills
south east of Edinburgh.
In fact this ”Edinburgh Malt' is the closest remaining distillery to Scotland's
capital; the Clydelsdale, St Magdalene, Grange and Rosebank distilleries have
all been closed. Glenkinchie is
included in the Six Classic Mats range from Diageo. Amontillado sherry casks
are used to finish The Distillers Edition bottlings. The stills at Glenkinchie
have unusual angled lyne-arms at the top of thickish necks and a rather unusual
rectangular two storey high worm-tub. All in favour to produce a lighter more
elegant spirit. The old floor maltings now houses a museum, full of old and
traditional implements and tools. Among them copper ‘dogs’ - used to smuggle
stolen spirit; some slim enough to be filled through the bung-hole of a cask
and then hung inside a trouser-leg others shaped like a breastplate. There is
also an impressive scale model of a tradional distillery.

The history of Glenkinchie Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded: Licensed
as Glenkinchie in 1837 by the Rate brothers. Situated in a green glen in the East
Lothians old farmlands; famous not only for its top-grade barley
but also as battlegrounds between English and Scots, whisky production began as
a part-time business on the Rate brothers’ farm near Pencaitland in the early
19th century. In 1825 they increased capacity under the name Milton
Distillery (changed to Glenkinchie in 1837). The spirit trickled until the Rate
brothers were bankrupted in 1853 and the distillery became a cowshed and
sawmill. DCL, The forerunners of today’s owners, Diageo (United Distillers);
Glenkinchie Distillery Co began production again in 1881. The distillery was
renovated in 1891. Housing for the workers was also built at this time. During
the hard years of the WW1 the Scottish Malt Distillers were formed by five
distilleries in the Lowlands.
