Situated in the rolling wooded valley at Dumgoyne, on
the south-western edge of the Highlands, close to a river that flows into the Loch
Lomond to the north of Glasgow, the distillery have produced whisky for nearly
200 years. The distillery, which takes its name from "Glen Guin" or
Glen of the Wild Geese, is close to the population centres of Glasgow and the
Scottish central belt, thus have many visitors. With its neat, manicured
buildings and whitewashed stone walls, picturesque distillery yard, traditional
Dunnage warehouses as well as a nice visitor centre its well worth the visit. It
even has its own helipad for helicopters if youre on a tight schedule. Its
beauty, isn't Glengoyne's only claim to fame, they’re also suppliers of
whiskies to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's household.
Before a rebuilding in 1966, Glengoyne was one of the
smallest distilleries in Scotland. The Highland Line, which divide Highland
from Lowland Scotland, actually splits the distillery in two, thus Glengoyne is
distilled in the Highlands and matured in the Lowlands. Don’t miss the
waterfall a short walk up the hill behind the main building.

The history of Glengoyne Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded: Licensed
in 1833. At the beginning of the nineteenth century it is
recorded that at least eighteen whisky stills were in operation in the area,
most of them illegal. Today Glengoyne is one of the few distilleries remaining.
In those days heavy taxes was imposed and smuggling was common, covered in the
hills and glens. Rob Roy, is believed to have escaped the law by hiding in an
oak tree just 300 metres from the distillery. In the 1820’s an Act of Parliament
lowered the duty and Glengoyne was legalised in 1833. The first owner of the
distillery was George Connell who erected the distillery and a warehouse, which
is still in use. In 1876, the Lang Brothers bought the distillery, ownership passed
to the Edrington Group in the 1960’s and to its present owners Ian Macleod
Distillers in 2003.
