As you drive North from Inverness you enter the Northern Highland region, with its loch-fed mountain streams, and it's from the heart of this promising country that Glen Ord comes. The first thing you see is the modern factory-style maltings of Glen Ord Maltings. Behind it is the handsome distillery with twin pagodas, cream buildings and old stone warehouses of Glen Ord, named after couthy town Muir of Ord ("the moor by the hill") nearby. Glen Ord has produced a richly more-ish malt whisky, once memorably described as "perilously drinkable", since the first year of Queen Victoria's reign.

At Glen Ord the malting tradition have lived on, today the roaring sound and peat smoke of the ventilated kiln fires from the drum maltings can be be heard and smelled near the distillery, providing many of the current owner Diageo’s distilleries with malt. Glen Ord has won several awards, it’s included in Diageo’s ‘Hidden Malts’ and Special Releases series and the Dewar’s blend. Independent bottlings are rare and older bottlings can be found under names as 'Glenordie', 'Ordie' or 'Ord'. The 16 year old 'Manager's Dram' is popular with collectors.

The history of Glen Ord Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: As early as the 16th century milling and brewing took place on the site of the distillery, situated on the peninsula “Black Isle” near Muir of Ord (which means moor next to the hill) north of Inverness. The Mackenzie clan used the same well, Allt Fionnaidh burn, later tapped by his kinsman, Alexander Mackenzie, in 1878 when he re-built the distillery, founded in 1838 by Robert Johnston, after a fire. Several other stills were licensed near the distillery, turning all the barley in the area into fast cash. Export went out to Singapore, South Africa and other British colonies. Back in 1896 the distillery was bought by the blending company James Watson & Co who sold the blend 'Watson's No. 10'. In 1923 John Dewar & Sons changed the name to ‘Glen Ord’. From 1930, Scottish Malt Distillers, continuously improved the distillery with electricity and additional stills.
