Dalmore Distillery

Ross-shire
Scotland

Website
The distillery is beatifully
located in Victorian stone buildings right by the shore of the bay at Cromarty
Firth north of Inverness, allowing a great view over The Black Isle and
occasional impressive oil platforms that come in for repairwork. The Black Isle
is fact not and island but a peninsula.
During the WW1 the warehouses was requisitioned to
manufacture mines and all the whisky was moved with not a single barrel missing
when returned. Some of the old stills has survived and is still in use today
with their unusual outline, with flat tops and cooling system made of running
water over the outside of the stillnecks. For
over 160 years, the distillery has produced malts of great distinction, some
100,000 casks can be found on site with the oldest one from the 1939
distillation.

The history of Dalmore Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded in 1839 on the farm of
Alexander Matheson the still was installed legally like many others following 1823
Act, which made distilling viable. He leased it out to two families before the Mackenzie
family got the lease in 1867 and later took ownership in 1886. The Mackenzie’s
retained it for over 80 years until 1960 when it was bought by the Glasgow
based Whyte & Mackay Group. The Mackenzie crest, the twelve-pointed stag, is
still featured on the label. Like many other distilleries a single railway line
together with steamers supplied the destillery with peat and barley in the old
days.
