Aberlour distillery is situated at the junction of the rivers Lour and Spey, the distillery is surrounded by glorious scenery, dominated by the rugged peaks of Ben Rinnes. Water plays an important part at Aberlour. The name means ‘mouth of the noisy burn’. It uses the holy, soft peaty water of formerly St Drostan's Well (St Drosdan became Archbishop in Canterburry in 960). The Aberlour Distillery was founded in 1879 by the former grain dealer James Fleming, it remained water powered until 1960.

Tasting notes: (10 years 40%) Medium bodied, honey, fruit, malt, toffee and spices.

The production at Aberlour Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
Malt and malting: The barley is bought from malting companies slightly peated to less than 3 ppm.
Distilling and the stills: Washstills: 2, 14 900 litres, internal steam coils. Spiritstills: 2, broad based, internal steam coils.
Watersource: St Drostan´s Well is located on the grounds with soft water (pH level of 7) from the granite mountain Ben Rinnes filtered through layers of peat. The cooling water is taken from the river Spey which runs close by.
Barrels and casks: Sherry and Bourbon.
Bond and Warehousing: 6 warehouses on site
Mashing and fermentation: Washbacks: 6, wood, each 60 000 litres. 48 hours fermentation.
Production: 2-3 million litres a year.
