Built in 1826 by James Henderson in the town of Wick (or Pulteneytown), Pulteney is the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland. Situated by the North Sea coast Pulteney had its peak in the 19th-century when thousands fo fishing craft crammed the bay and the herring industry brought prosperity. The distillery was only accessible by sea, the barley was brought and the whisky shipped out by boat.
In 1995 the distillery was sold to Inver House Distillers, to use in their blends and to complement their three malt distilleries; Knockdhu, Speyburn and Balblair. Pulteney have a reputation to mature quickly though slow enough to let the sea breeze create its distinct salty tang, hence its nickname "The Manzanilla of the North". Manzanilla do supply casks but the saltiness probably owes more to the sea-air. The fishing heritage of Wick is portrayed on the label with a traditional Wick herring drifter.

Information about the tour at Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
Tour in short: A good average tour recommended if you're in the area. The two stills at Pulteney are very unusual; one has the top cut off one, the other resembles a small compact “smuggler’s kettle”. The distillery itself is not the prettiest around but the excellent presentation of the bottle, a dram and the fascinating history of the fishing trade in the area gives the visit a lift.

The history of Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery:

Founded: 1826 by James Henderson. The busy town of Wick was in itself a good base for the distillery that remained in the family’s hands for almost a century until it was closed during the 1920's. The days for fishing run out in the 50s but the whisky started to trickle once again, from rebuilt stills, under the wings of the Hiram Walker company in 1959, with the purpose to contribute to the Ballantine blends. In 1995 the distillery was sold to Inver House Distillers, to use in their blends and to complement their three malt distilleries; Knockdhu, Speyburn and Balblair.
