Set among the gentle, green slopes just south of Forgue near Huntley. Glendronach have retained many traditional ways; barley from local farms are still floor malted and lightly peated in the pagoda-headed malt-kiln; until recently the stills were heated by naked flames from coal-fires and the whisky matures in traditional Dunnage warehouses with earth floors.

The bottlings of Glendronach can be categorized into three types: the Original, tapped from bourbon and sherry casks; the 100 per cent sherry-aged version; and the Traditional, a 12 years old sherried style aged in second or third fill sherry casks. If you’re in the area don’t miss the remarkable Huntly castle ruins from the 14th century.

Information about the tour at Glendronach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
Tour in short: Down to earth tour with maltings and traditional whisky making (the only coal-fired distillery left). Nice both for beginners and aficionados. Set in a beautiful small village with its grey stone buildings, warehouses and the Glen House (200 years old) it looks and feels like a distillery should. All nicely wrapped up by friendly staff, humour and tasty drams.

The history of Glendronach Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: The distillery was built by James Allardic in 1826, three years after the Excise Act favourably changed the conditions for distilling. It all went well until it burnt down in 1937. Just a smoking ruin with a licence, Walter Scott saw the potential (he worked at the Teaninich distillery) bought it and ran the Glendronach until 1916. Production had been down for four years when Charles Grant, one of the sons of William Grant, got the distillery up and running again. The Grants sold it in 1960 to William Teacher & Sons (today Allied Domecq) and the Glendronach were included in the Ballantine and Teacher blends. In 1995 the distillery was mothballed, but production was resumed in 2004.
