Ben Nevis is Gaelic for ”cloudy mountain” refering to Britains
highest mountain (1343 metres). The mountain not only attracts visitors it serves
the distillery, situated by its foot, with pure spring water. The current owner, the Nikka Whisky Distilling
Company of Japan
reopened the distillery in 1990 and have pledged themselves to maintain the
quality and excellence set by the founder John Macdonald. A large part of the
production is sold blended, particularly to Japan.

The history of Ben Nevis Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distillery
History of the distillery: Founded: 1825
av ‘Long John’ MacDonald. The distillery
was succesfull in its early days. When the founder “Long” John Macdonald died
in 1865, his son Donald MacDonald took over. A year later he reports that 51
people are employed with a total wage bill of £32 weekly. To meet demand he
built another distillery in 1878 he called Glen Nevis. This structure is used
today as warehouse. By 1887 the production was 2000 gallons a week, ten times
the amount fifty years earlier. After more than 100 years and 3 generations of
Macdonald the distillery was sold to Joseph Hobbs in 1941. In 1978 production
stopped and years of uncertainty followed. In 1981 Ben
Nevis was accuired by the Long John International (part of the
Spirits Division of Whitbread). By demand they started production again in 1984
only to stop 2 years later.
